Holiday Flyer Interview How did you start playing together? Was it more competitive or cooperative? John: We started Holiday Flyer in June of '93 as I had been in some other bands, & Katie & I had just left a band we were in together. We decided to put some songs together and make a tape. Very cooperative I would say. Katie: I guess we're weird siblings because we've never been very competitive with each other. I honestly can't remember how we started playing together, it just happened to work out that way. I think we just work together well and we have fun! Can you give us some background, where you got the name, when did you start recording...? Katie: Which story should I tell this time? just kidding! I say that because the story isn't very exciting. well, John and I went to see Belly at Slim's in San Francisco ("star" tour) and we were trying to think of names all the way there and nothing sounded quite right. So, we decided to stop talking about it. We just figured it would come to one of us and it did. John turned to me in the middle of the show (between bands) and said "how about Holiday Flyer?" and I said, "sound's good!" that's it, that's all! How did you meet up with Keith and his Silver Girl Records? John: Clint from Four Letter Words told me about Silver Girl. He gave me their phone number and address, so I sent Keith a tape and a couple weeks later I called him to see if he got the package, and he had and he liked it. We met with him a few weeks later in S.F. Katie: So, when he got into S.F. He called us and the three of us met up and spent the day in Berkeley we hit it off with Keith immediately. I never thought I'd meet anyone who could laugh as much as me! Keith is great and we're very happy to be working with Silver Girl. Do you guys play a lot of shows? What has been your most memorable show? John: When we started we never intended to play shows. We hardly play in Sacramento at all. We have played in L.A. a few times. My most memorable shows are opening for the Red House Painters in Sacramento, and for Low in S.F. Katie can tell you about Hell's Gate. Katie: Thanks john. first I have to say that the people at Hell's Gate are very nice, but that place is scary! We played there once before the Small Factory show, but we weren't there long enough to see how scary it was. Anyway, this show Verna played with us and she needs a chair to play her cello. They didn't have a chair for her to sit in and so she had to sit on this dirty metal table. we were the first of five bands that night so needless to say the only people there were our friends from Silver Girl and Fingerpaint Records. Don't get me wrong it's always nice to have friends at shows! Okay, so maybe that doesn't sound all that bad, but you need to understand that Hell's Gate is in the heart of the worst part of Hollywood and there are skulls in the back room. I mean don't go to the bathroom there alright! We didn't even get to see Small Factory because we felt it was in our best interest to leave. Sadness. I cried at our show with American Music Club. What does the future hold for Holiday Flyer? Tours? New songs? New records? John: Well, our CD just came out and that has been exciting for us. We don't plan on touring for a while. We'd like to play some shows in New York in the coming year. New songs? Lots! New records? We would like to do another 7" & we'll hopefully start working on the second album in March. Katie: Ditto. Yes. Right on! What else takes up your time? Day jobs? Hobbies? School? tell, tell, tell! John: I work at a grocery store. I like to paint. I like to spend as much time as I can with my girlfriend, Verna (she played bass on our CD). Oh yes, and I go to school. Katie: Surprise, I work at a record store. it's called The Beat. if anyone is ever in Sacramento, come and say "hi." I go to school and hang out with my boyfriend. He lives in San Francisco so I've been going there a lot. I like to make collages. I like getting haircuts. That may not sound like a hobby, but I get my hair cut a LOT...it's kind of funny. If you could be invisible for one day, what would you do? John: I really don't know how to answer this one. Well, I guess I would drive around in my truck making people think I was a ghost on the loose, or play some jokes on people. does that sound good? Katie: That sounds good. But like me, John would probably freak out. After that, I would go to a bunch of movies and then hopefully, there would be a good show that night and I'd get in for free! |
