Kill Me Tomorrow Chrome
Yellow CD (SG-036) On
their latest release, Kill Me Tomorrow relies heavily on interdependant
guitar/vocal arrangements, hypnotic effects, spare, analog electronics,
dense, passionately-delivered lyrics and spastic, tom-heavy drumming applied
to smart, psychedelic, nervy, new-wave/post-punk-pop songs. Recent comparisons
have been made to bands as diverse as Joy Division, Suicide, Wire, The
Fall, Neu!, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, Silver Apples, Can and Pere
Ubu. All bystanders agree that nobody is currently producing anything
that sounds quite like Kill Me Tomorrow nor delivered with their uniquely
personable, quirky charm. The
release of this inimitable Silver Girl CD, recorded by San Diego indie
engineering hero Rafter Roberts, offers five original songs by the band
and five re-mixes by friends Pall Jenkins (Black Heart Procession/Three
Mile Pilot), Jimmy Lavalle (Tristeza/Album Leaf), Telefon (Billy Sqrague
of Rocket Racer Records) and Rafter Roberts (who has recorded Black Heart
Procession, Album Leaf, Go Go Go Airheart, the And/Ors, Soul Junk, Maquiladora). Kill
Me Tomorrow began in 1995 when K8 and Zack met through a friend in Portland,
Oregon. Their mutual obsession with the Velvet Underground, Joy Division
and Beat Happening inspired them to start a lo-fi, pop project that stayed
in the bedroom until they were prompted to play out by friends a few years
later. Through their popular live shows and the distribution of their
homemade tapes they came to the attention of Kat records who released
their debut 7". Soon thereafter Kill Me Tomorrow was featured on
the Drive Thru Records compilation "Where's the Beef?" (featuring
works by Chris Knox, the Get Up Kids, the Wrens, Bracket and Weezer side-project
the Space Twins). Fed up with the weather and a band that was unable to
tour, K8 and Zack re-located to San Diego, California. Following staff
changes, the accumulation of dozens of effects pedals and the well-received
"Happy First" CD (Bad Ice Cream Recordings) they settled on
the stripped-down trio of Zack on percussion, electronics and vocals,
K8 on vocals and bass and Dan Wise (Bartender's Bible, Women) on guitar
and vocals. Kill
Me Tomorrow's ultra-brief, intense and dizzying live performances are
a must-see that have earned them a fervent cult following and the respect
and admiration of many fellow musicians/bands across the country. Kill
Me Tomorrow will be heading out on their third West Coast tour during
Fall/Winter 2001 and again, more extensively, in the Spring of 2002. New music by Kill Me Tomorrow is available on the GSL label Discography
